"A Minor Annoyance"

Corpse suspended in amber
liquid, a floating mass that,

after initial shock,

holds no appeal or interest.
Conversation barely
           pauses as
fingertips weave through
   foam, prepared to pluck
the beer-soaked body,

but black bristles quiver on
kicking legs, wings twitch

and the resurrection
jolts an intoxicated
shout that tapers to
nervous giggle.

Resident Evil (2002) is a ridiculous horror scifi film, and one of the earlier 'viral warfare zombie' movies. Not the first by any means, but it was not common at the time. Now, it seems like most fall along these lines. Human-made virus... Ooooh scary!

Anyway, the movie isn't a favorite of mine by any means, but my husband asked if I would rewatch it with him. I'm always up for revisiting anything that even hints at horror. Besides, some of the jumps and non-CGI gore looked pretty good. The Red Queen is a spooky little thing. It's an alright flick.

The poem was inspired from the first real jump-scare in the film. A corpse floating through beer-colored water? It was visually interesting. The actors care for a matter of seconds about seeing the first dead body that crossed their path. They have a little chat in front of the floating woman, and as they walk away, well, we all know what happens next...
