"Modern Time Machine"

Desktop image, Dr.
Herbert West holding a
syringe of glowing green,
ready to inject the serum
into a maniacally laughing
severed head,

flashes on the screen
before its replacement arrives
-- blank orange. And
        repeat
        repeat
        repeat
dizzying, the cool and warm light
alternates, strobes across my face
while I try to recall
                   how I might arrive safely
          in safe mode
and send my computer back in time.

Shift+F8

And the flux capacitor hums.

One of my all-time favorite movies. Jeffrey Combs is amazingly campy in Re-animator (1985) as well as the sequels. Of course, all of his appearances in Stuart Gordon movies are spot-on perfection in my book. Excellent performances all around (including co-star David Gale, aka the severed head), and as far as the horror-comedy balance goes, the movie cannot be beat. Not even by my beloved Sleepaway Camp series.

There are some odd connections in this piece: a computer virus, Re-animator, and Back to the Future? Hey, it happens.

I might as well note that the screenshot is not the background image I use on my laptop. It is actually a painting by a fan. It is well done, funny, and gory-- much like the movie. As I do not own the rights to the image, you will simply have to use your imaginations.
